Where It All Began
Eden Education was founded in 2017 by teachers Paul Rivers and Katrina Hewgill with a simple but powerful vision: to create an educational environment where students could thrive, regardless of their previous experiences of education. Built by teachers, for students, Eden was established in response to the growing belief that education had become burdened by paperwork, administration and processes that often distracted from what truly matters, helping young people learn, grow and succeed.

Our Educational Philosophy
Drawing inspiration from the child-centred philosophies of Montessori and Waldorf (Steiner) education, we stripped education back to its essentials whilst maintaining a robust and academically rigorous curriculum. We developed an ethos centred on small classes, flexible learning, strong pastoral care and meaningful relationships between staff and students. Rather than asking children to fit into a system, we sought to create a system that could adapt to the individual child. At the same time, we retained clear academic expectations and qualifications that would enable students to progress confidently into further education, employment and university.

Get Rid Of It...
We removed unnecessary administrative burdens from our teachers and students, allowing them to dedicate the time that would otherwise have been spent on paperwork directly back to their students and learning. From the very beginning, class sizes were limited to a maximum of five students, creating a calm, welcoming and supportive environment where every learner is known, understood and valued as an individual.

Building Strong Foundations
Our initial focus was on providing strong foundations in English Language, Mathematics and Science whilst encouraging students to engage with subjects that genuinely interested them. We believed that students learn best when they can see purpose and enjoyment in their education, whilst still developing the core skills needed for future success.

Growing Beyond the Core Curriculum
As Eden Education has grown, so has our curriculum. What began with the core subjects has expanded to include Art, History, English Literature, Geography, Photography, Computer Graphics, Computer Science, Games Design, Sociology and Psychology. We now offer several A Level pathways, alongside Functional Skills qualifications, International GCSEs and the AQA Unit Award Scheme, ensuring that students of all abilities and backgrounds have meaningful routes to success.

Learning Beyond the Classroom
We firmly believe that education extends beyond qualifications. Students are encouraged to develop confidence, creativity and social skills through enrichment opportunities including chess, anime, model making, computing projects and games design. Every Thursday evening we proudly host the Carlisle Chess Club, which now meets at Eden Education's Abbey Street premises and continues a long tradition of competitive and community chess within the region. [carlislechess.co.uk]

Specialists in ADHD and Autism Support
Perhaps the most significant development in our journey has been our specialism in supporting children and young people with ADHD and Autism. Many of the students who arrive at Eden have experienced significant challenges within mainstream education, including school avoidance, anxiety, sensory difficulties, reduced attendance and a loss of confidence in their own abilities.

We understand that behaviour is communication and that learning can only take place when young people feel safe, respected and understood. Our staff take time to build trust, adapt teaching methods and create personalised learning pathways that allow every student to progress at a pace that works for them. Through consistency, patience and understanding, we help students rediscover a love of learning and a belief in their own potential.

Success Through Individualised Learning
The success of this approach can be seen through the achievements of our students. One student joined us after being out of education for almost three years. Diagnosed with both ADHD and Autism, they believed they were too far behind to ever achieve meaningful qualifications.Through personalised support, small-group teaching and a learning programme tailored to their needs, they progressed rapidly over two years and achieved grades of 7 and above across all of their chosen GCSE subjects.

They later progressed to university, graduating with a First-Class degree in Engineering.Their story is just one example of many students who have rediscovered confidence, rebuilt their self-belief and exceeded their own expectations at Eden Education.

A Different Kind of Education
We do not operate like a traditional school, college or educational institution because our focus has always been different. By working directly with young people in small classes and building genuine relationships, we have created an environment where students can grow academically, socially and personally.

Today, more than 90% of our students leave with recognised qualifications, regularly achieving GCSE grades between 4 and 9 and strong A Level outcomes, including A and B grades. Our approach proves that when education is adapted to the child rather than expecting the child to adapt to the system, remarkable outcomes can be achieved.

Our Commitment to Every Student
Our teachers are patient, approachable and genuinely invested in the success of every student who walks through our doors. They work at the pace individual learners need whilst continually encouraging them to aim higher, challenge themselves and realise their full potential. At Eden Education, we believe every child is capable of achieving remarkable things when given the right environment, the right support and people who genuinely believe in them.

That belief has been at the heart of Eden Education since the day we opened our doors.

News & Star

Recognition, Resilience & Learning from Experience

One of the proudest moments in Eden Education's journey came in 2025 when we were nominated for the prestigious In-Cumbria Business Awards. While we did not take home the award on the night, being shortlisted was an achievement in itself and a reflection of how far Eden had come since opening its doors in 2017.

As a small independent educational provider, it was both humbling and inspiring to be recognised alongside some of Cumbria's most established and respected organisations, including major regional employers and household names. To be competing at the same level as organisations with considerably larger teams, resources and histories demonstrated that the work being undertaken at Eden Education is making a genuine impact across the region.

The evening was a fantastic celebration of innovation, hard work and success throughout Cumbria, and we were incredibly proud to represent the education sector. However, perhaps the most important lesson was not the nomination itself, but what it taught our students.

Real success comes from having the courage to put yourself forward, to compete with the very best, and to keep moving forward regardless of the outcome. We wanted our students to see that achievement is not diminished simply because somebody else wins. Being nominated amongst Cumbria's leading organisations was recognition that we belong in those conversations and that our work is valued and respected.

Failure, disappointment and setbacks are all part of growth. The important thing is how we respond to them. By continuing to learn, improve and strive for excellence, we model the same resilience that we try to instil in every young person who walks through our doors.

We may not have brought home the trophy, but we left with something equally important: pride in what we have achieved, gratitude for the recognition, and a renewed determination to continue changing lives through education. That is a lesson worth teaching, and one we are proud for our students to witness.
